On Thursday 24 January Prof. Ilya Prigogine Nobel
Laureate in chemistry visited Geneva just before his 85th birthday and
delivered a lecture for physicists and bankers at CERN.
Below you can see the photo-gallery of some
interesting moments of that day as seen by our
photographer. |
Arrival to Geneva airport. This is where our
short story takes off. A moment later Prigogine’s limousine will be on the way
from the airport to the hotel. |

First steps on Geneva soil. A moment to remember:
in front of the hotel Beau-Rivage. |
| from left to
right: Tomio Petrosky, Professor, University of Austin, Texas, USA; Dr. Allan
Din, Coordinator of the GRC project, Inter-Survey Consultants, Geneva; Dr. Andre
Duka, Dukascopy Research Group, Geneva; Prof. Ilya
Prigogine. |
No time for rest - to work at once! In the
morning Prof. Ilya Prigogine organized a business reception at his hotel to
study the results of work of Dukascopy Research Group which applies and develops
some of his theoretical results on points of bifurcation in the behaviour of
complex systems. A sightseeing tour around Geneva will have to wait till
later. |

Dr. Allan Din; Prof. Tomio Petrosky. |

The object in Prigogine’s hands is a Geiger
counter. Another illustration of Professor’s wide interests: from predicting
fluctuations of the cosmic rays and the use of physical theories to forecast
market prices. |

Meeting with the General Director of CERN before
the Prof. Prigogine's lecture. |
from left around the table: Dr. Andre Duka; Dr. Allan
Din; Luciano Maiani, Professor of Theoretical Physics, University of Rome "La
Sapienza", General Director, CERN, Geneva; Prof. Ilya Prigogine with his spouse;
Prof. Tomio Petrosky. |

Two distinguished people Prof. Luciano Maiani and
Prof. Ilya Prigogine in discussion. They have a lot to say to each
other. |
Luciano Maiani explains some of his contributions to the theory of
unstable particles in a very charismatic and lively way.

Ilya Prigogine (who has the title of Viscount in
Belgium) is an attentive and graceful listener. No doubt a sign of a real
nobleman. |
Ilya Prigogine with his spouse. For 40 years
Marina has been her husband’s Muse and Primavera. Who knows which part of
Prigogine’s famous “arrow of time” appeared in reality due to this
woman… |

Ilya Prigogine with his reliable friend and
assistant. In an hour's time Prof. Tomio Petrosky will be the technical support
crew, directing the lecture from the backstage. |
Half an hour before the start of the talk.
Coffee break before the lecture: such mixture of bankers and physicists may seem
strange at first sight but is absolutely common for Geneva Research
Collaboration events. |
from left to right: Prof. Mikhail Kanevski, IDIAP (Dalle
Mol le Institute for Perceptual Artificial Intelligence); Dr. Didier Michoud,
Banque Cantonale de Genève; Michel Maignan, Vice-president, Cantonal Bank of
Geneva and Professor, University of Lausanne; Prof. Ilya Prigogine; Dr. Andre
Duka; Prof. Tomio Petrosky. |

Allan Din, physicist-theorist, former
collaborator in the Theory Division at CERN, Geneva, currently coordinator of
the GRC project and financial researcher makes an opening
speech. |
Prigogine gives a lecture about chaos and order
in the main auditorium of CERN. Picture of vitality - bravo
maestro! |

Professor is waiting for the next slide. Is he
too fast even for his young assistant? |
Bankers and physicists listen attentively to
Prigogine's lecture. You won’t find any bored faces around here! Marina, spouse
of Ilya Prigogine, (first from the right) is always at the epicenter of
events. |

The lecture is over – time to share views and impressions.
Prof. Herwig Schopper, Former General Director of CERN
and Dr. Andre Duka. |
Prigogine presents the GRC group with an
autographed copy of his book.

"La fin des Certitudes" by Ilya
Prigogine. Editions Odile Jacob, 1996, 1998,
Paris. |
Prof. Herwig Schopper, Former General Director of CERN and
Prof. Ilya Prigogine who have known each other for a long time have much to talk
about before ... |
...and after the lecture. |
Cocktail party at the Hotel Beau-Rivage
organized by the GRC to celebrate the maestro's 85th
anniversary. |
. |
Soon the atmosphere of the party became free and
relaxed. |
| from left to
right: Dr. Allan Din; Prof. Ilya Prigogine; Eric Berthelot, Vice-president,
Crédit Agricole Indosuez, Geneva; Bruno Estier, President of the Swiss
Association of Market Technicians, SAMT and Chairman of the International
Federation of Technical Analysts, IFTA. |
Physicist Dr. Francesco Ruggiero, CERN and
banker Jean-Marie Wéry, Member of the committee of the board, Bank SCS Alliance,
Geneva, seem to have struck a common note... After all, markets and physics seem
to have a lot in common. |
Dr. Francesco
Ruggiero - on the left, Jean-Marie Wéry - on the right. |

Eric Borgeaux, Member of the board, Cantonal Bank
of Geneva - an open, sociable and friendly person - always keeping his
bank at the front edge of modern science and technology. |
In the center - Eric Berthelot, Vice-president,
Crédit Agricole Indosuez, Geneva and a journalist Veronika
Makarova. |
Yet another "remarkable" moment: Allan Din has
already become a happy possessor of a glass of juice and Bruno Estier is only
reaching for one… |
…and a minute later Bruno Estier notices that his collocutor
still won this small competition by grabbing himself a biscuit! |

Prof. Ilya Prigogine and the birthday cake with
the symbol of the “arrow of time” discovered by him. |
And 85 is not the limit: the professor is full
of life and thirst for work and new knowledge. |

When a man’s a real star it is impossible to
hide even on a photo!
Happy birthday to you,
maestro!
